Where to begin with this one?
Have you've ever read a YA fantasy novel and feel like there is just something missing?
Powerless has what you were missing!
Paedyn and Kai are our two main characters, thankfully we get both their POVs through the entire novel.
The book is set in a kingdom where everyone has powers and those who don't are set to be killed. Guess what, Paedyn has no powers, put her life in danger everyday.
Kai the second prince, the enforcer his job is to hunt and kill all those who are powerless.
One day Paedyn shows off her "powers" getting her called up to compete to be the best of the powerful. She knows to stay alive she is going to have to rely on all her survival skills from going up in slums. During the trials she learns she is going to have to rely on one more thing or person to get through these trails. She is going to have to team up with one person she hates the most, the person she can't trust, Kai.
Kai knows his place, knows how powerful he really is, but he doesn't want to be in the position he is in. He knows there is no way out, he has to survive the trials and serve his King. When coming across Paedyn he becomes attached, even when he knows he shouldn't. He wants to push back and question everything. He wants better for himself.
Enemies to lovers trope can truly be used to explain this book. Not only is their tension blazing from their words, their actions are on another level. The amount of times they each held a knife to each others throats is numerous! Then Kai goes and hits us with the "Who did this to you?" line and i'm gone.(sigh)
We also get such amazing side charters you want nothing, but the best for them. You feel for these side charters so deeply, because of how well built they are, how personal they are. It rare you are able to find a book where the side characters deserve their own story.
Now as fun as this book is I will warn, I cried. A-lot. That is a testament to how good the writing is, this book grabs a hold on you and does not leave you, like ever!
I say if you want to feel, and love pick up this book!
I'll leave you with the quote that hit the most for me:
"What have you done to me?" - Powerless by Lauren Roberts
